Preparing
new Team for 2009
To ensure the growth of the FLL
program through 2009 we decided to start a pilot project with 16
schools in the Pretoria West district. The project is aimed at
disadvantaged communities, but not exclusively.
The idea is to prepare grade 6
learners for FLL competitions in 2009. It will give them working
knowledge of basic mechanical concepts while getting them aquinted
with LEGO building blocks. Nearly 2000 learners has already started to
participate in the program. The following schools has been included
in this project:
- Mahlwareng Primary School
- Marefeng Primary School
- Mlokotwa Dube Primary School
- Laerskool Hermanstad
- Laerskool Eendracht
- Laerskool Tuine
-
Lesolang Primary School
-
Maropeng Primary School
-
Tim Modise Primary School
-
Marula Primary School
-
Botsalo Primary School
-
Ikeleng Primary School
-
Gontse Primary School
-
Sinqobile Primary School
-
Rodney Mokoena Primary School
-
Sun Valley
The project has been approved by the
Department of Education. We hope to provide each school with 4
workshops during the year and have a competition for the top learners
at the end of the 2008.
FIRST LEGO League Teams at
TUT
The TUT has also decided to support
a great number of FIRST LEGO League teams this year. The idea is to
give as many learners as possible the opportunity to participate in
FLL.
Training workshops for teams are
done at the engineering department of the TUT. Teams from the
following schools have already started with the training:
- Southdowns College
- Waterkloof Hoërskool
- MenloPark Hoërskool
- MenloPark Laerskool
- Garsfontein Laerskool
- WierdaPark Laerskool
- Johannes Calvyn
- HTS John Vorster
- St. Paulus
- Centurion Christian Academy.
More schools will be nominated by
the Department of Education and will start with their training in May
2008.
Beyond FIRST LEGO League
The need for South Africa to have a
sustainable robotics program for high school learners is pressing. We
loose too many FLL veterans each year because they are to old. With no
real program for them in later years, most of these learners are
getting lost in the system.
At the TUT we are currenlty
developing such a program for high school learners based on the OCCRA
(Oakland County Competitive Robotics Asosiation) robotics challenge.
We hope to have this competition going within the next 8 to 12 months.
Currently we have 1 joint FIRST
Robotics Team ( Team 1025 - Impi robotics). It is a joint initiative
between Trophy Robotics in South Africa and schools from Detroit
Michigan in the USA. The team has been created in 2007 and has already
won awards for animation, safety and robot quality. The Impi team has
also participated in the World Championship tournament in Altanta and
has been under the top 30 teams in their division.
Impi Robotics Team in South Africa
will be starting interviews with potential new member in May 2008.
Please contact Pieter Pretorius (zt.admin@mweb.co.za) if you are
interested in joining the team. We will send you the correct
information as well as an application form. We plan on interviewing
new members in the following categories: robot building (4), robot
programming (2), animation, 3D graphics and website design (4).
